Abstract

Modified Quadruple conical tank system is benchmark a laboratory setup for testing of various linear and nonlinear control algorithms for the multivariable control system. This novel arrangement of quadruple conical tank system provides multiple process configuration for multivariable input-output. This paper presents the hardware structure of quadruple conical tank, computer interfacing using LabVIEW software, mathematical modelling of system and dynamic behaviour study. Additionally, paper explores the open loop response based parametric analysis for different input and output configurations with various operating points of quadruple conical tank system using linearized model obtained from LabVIEW. Through comparative studies of open loop response in simulation environment and real-time hardware system, the effect of interaction, coupling, time variations and change in dynamic behavior of QCTS confirmed

As the level of fluid inside the conical tank varies, time constant and gain of the process will also vary. Abstract

Signaling pathways play a pivotal role to maintain the homeostasis of the biological system, alterations in which, lead to the onset of severe diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. Dysregulation of the glucose metabolism causes malfunction of the insulin signaling pathways. Insufficient or no insulin production leads to type 1, while, insulin resistance leads to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Recent advances in the field of systems biology encourages use of control theoretic approach to investigate the interactions within the insulin signaling pathways. The present paper provides a detailed survey and critics on various control theoretical approaches like parameter optimization, sensitivity and robustness analysis adopted by system biologists. Additionally, unsatisfactory drug treatments may lead to need of an alternative therapies like body exercise and acupuncture. Last section of the paper discusses on alternative therapies in type 2 diabetes as an open area for the researchers working from control theoretic perspective.

Abstract

MultiInputs MultiOutput(MIMO)processes are very common in industrial environment. These loops comprise multiple measurement (sensor) and manipulating (control) signals.The quadruple tank systemis popular test bench setup to demonstrate various properties of MIMO process. Major challenge faced while designing a control system for MIMO processes is the interaction (or coupling) between inputs and outputs. In such cases conventional multi loop PID control works when the coupling is less or weak. When interactions increases then the conventional multi loop PID control fails. Hence, need arises to provide control solutions for highly coupled system and one of the most primitive approach is to implement decoupler control. Thus, attempt is made to understand and realize the problem for controlling a highly coupled process with help of quadruple tank system. Design of decoupler using LabVIEW and its validation are the prime work of the presented paper.

Abstract

Multi Input – Multi Output (MIMO) processes are very commonly found in many chemical unit processes. Control of such MIMO processes is always challenging due to coupling between inputs and outputs. Even after very significant efforts made by the research fraternity, control of coupled MIMO process is still an open research issue. Computerized and easy to use laboratory scale set up is very essential to investigate performance of different control algorithm on MIMO process. An attempt is made to develop low cost, configurable, computerized and smaller size multi input multi output coupled process control laboratory test setup. The proposed set up has capability to interface with user friendly LabVIEW platform. With the help of this interface the user can easily deployed any newly developed algorithm and verify on this laboratory scale test set up. The performance of the developed set up is checked with different controller tuning conditions as well with different coupling condition of MIMO process. The performance confirms the functionality of the developed set up.

Abstract

This paper presents some investigations and comparison of linear versus non-linear static motor-control maps for the speed control of a BLDC (Brush Less Direct Current) motors used in quad-copter UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). The motor-control map considered here is the inverse of the static map relating motor-speed output to motor-voltage input for a typical out-runner type Brushless DC Motors (BLDCM). Traditionally, quad-copter BLDC motor speed control uses simple linear motor-control map defined by the motor-constant specification. However, practical BLDC motors show non-linear characteristic, particularly when operated across wide operating speed-range as is commonly required in quad-copter UAV flight operations. In this paper, our investigations to compare performance of linear versus non-linear motor-control maps are presented. The investigations cover simulation-based and experimental study of BLDC motor speed control systems for quad-copter vehicle available. First the non-linear map relating rotor RPM to motor voltage for quad-copter BLDC motor is obtained experimentally using an optical speed encoder. The performance of the linear versus non-linear motor-control-maps for the speed control is studied. The investigations also cover study of time-responses for various standard test input-signals e.g. step, ramp and pulse inputs, applied as the reference speed-commands. Also, simple 2- degree of freedom test-bed is developed in our laboratory to help test the open-loop and closed-loop experimental investigations. The non-linear motor-control map is found to perform better in BLDC motor speed tracking control performance and thereby helping achieve better quad-copter roll-angle attitude control

Abstract

Standard model for estimation of reference evapotranspiration rate (ET0) is the FAO-56 version of Penman–Monteith. It needs a wide range of atmospheric parameters like solar radiations, wind speed, air temperature, humidity, vapor pressure and soil heat flux. All these data may not be available at the majority of the locations. The estimation of evapotranspiration using the Hargreaves equation is a potential solution to this problem. It needs only temperature and radiation data to estimate ET0. But, simplification brings inaccuracy and need for regional calibration of the Hargreaves equation constants—CH and EH. Fuzzy logic based calibration of the constants CH and EH in the Hargreaves equation for diverse climate locations of India like—Bikaner, Calcutta, Kakinada, Coimbatore, Panjim-Goa, Kota, Deharadun, and Srinagar is performed and validated. Performance of modified Hargreaves equation (MHG) is compared with Hargreaves equation (HG) and FAO-56 version of Penman–Monteith (PM-56). MHG resulted in improvement by reducing the error in ET0 estimates. The root mean square error (RMSE) values reduce with the range 0.36–0.92 mm/day for MHG from 1.12 to 2.53 mm/day of HG. Location specific calibration improves the accuracy of the HG.

Abstract

Increased demand of farm products and depletion of natural resources compel the agriculture community to increase the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in various farming processes. Agricultural Decision Support Systems (DSS) proved useful in this regard. The majority of available Agricultural DSSs are either crop or task specific. Less emphasis has been placed on the development of comprehensive DSS, which are non-specific regarding crops or farming processes. The crop or task specific DSSs are mainly developed with rule based or knowledge transfer based approaches. The DSSs based on these methodologies lack the ability for scaling up and generalization. The Knowledge engineering modeling approach is more suitable for the development of large and generalized DSS. Unfortunately the model based knowledge engineering approach is not much exploited for the development of Agricultural DSS. CommonKADS is one of the popular modeling frameworks used for the development of Knowledge Based System (KBS). The paper presents the organization, agent, task, communication, knowledge and design models based on the CommonKADS approach for the development of scalable Agricultural DSS. A specific web based DSS application is used for demonstrating the multi agent CommonKADS modeling approach. The system offers decision support for irrigation scheduling and weather based disease forecasting for the popular crops of India. The proposed framework along with the required expert knowledge, provides a platform on which the larger DSS can be built for any crop at a given location.

Abstract

A reference evapotranspiration rate (ET0) is vital information for irrigation scheduling as well as plant growth modeling. Estimation of evapotranspiration using environmental variables is a convenient approach compare to direct measurement. Several mathematical models have been proposed for the estimation of ET0. Among all these, the Hargreaves equation has received maximum attention of the agricultural fraternity as it needs minimum weather data. However, requirement of minimal weather data in the Hargreaves equation makes it a simple and pragmatic model for estimation of ET0. The minimalist approach makes the equation incapable to estimate ET0 accurately under extreme weather conditions. The calibration or adjustment of the Hargreaves equation parameter CH and EH for different climate conditions is well accepted approach to accomplish error free estimation from the equation. The establish calibration methods are empirical and time consuming. Further, the results obtained by these methods are valid only for the restricted area and season only. This paper presents Evapotranspiration CALibration TOOL (ECALTOOL), which is a fuzzy based universal computer program developed on the platform of NI LabVIEW to calibrate CH and EH. The key features of the tool are its ability to provide calibration of ET0 for 1100 locations of 190 countries, and its user friendliness. The performance of the tool is compared and validated against the benchmark Penman-Monteith equation as well as the experimentally calibrated values for various locations with diverse climate conditions. Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) is in the range of 0.4856 – 1.1562 and 1.21%– 2.06% respectively. The calibrated values of CH and EH are proved to be accurate in comparison with experimentally carried out calibration. The developed tool eliminates the need of location specific experimental calibration process for the Hargreaves equation.

Abstract

Accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ETo) is a key factor in weather-based irrigation scheduling methods. To estimate ETo using the Hargreaves equation, just the data on the minimum and maximum temperature and solar radiation are required. However, this procedure cannot offer consistent accuracy for different climate conditions. To attain the accuracy, calibration of the equation constants (CH and EH) for different climate conditions have successfully been attempted by many researchers. Because these calibration procedures are lengthy and location-specific, there is a need of a generalized calibration method to make the Hargreaves equation more pertinent and effective. In this paper, fuzzy logic based calibration method for the Hargreaves equation is proposed and validated. The fuzzy inference system is developed to compute appropriate values of the constants CH and EH on the basis of past data on humidity and wind velocity of a selected location. The underlying relationship between weather conditions and the best values of the constants CH and EH are used to establish a fuzzy rule base. The performance of the method is checked at eight geographically different locations of India with diverse climate conditions. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) in ETo values estimated by the calibrated modified Hargreaves equation and the Penman-Monteith (PM) equation is in the range of 0.3220–1.0325. It is far more lower than if the error is calculated using the original Hargreaves equation. It confirms the correctness of the calibration method for different climate conditions.

Abstract

Decision Support System (DSS) is computerized tool to provide decision for partially known system. DSS for agriculture system gains popularity in recent past. Irrigation scheduling is one of the important aspects for profitably and sustainability in agriculture system. One of the widely used irrigation scheduling approach is `Water Balance Approach' as it does not requires highly accurate and costly sensors for soil moisture, canopy temperature, and leaf thickness. However, implementation of this method involves extensive computation and accurate measurement of large numbers of variables. In agriculture system, it is seldom possible to get accurate measurement values of necessary variables. This paper proposes fuzzy logic based DSS framework for irrigation scheduling. It is proposed to use fuzzy rule base for soil characterization, calculation of evapotranspiration, and estimation of root zone. Use of fuzzy logic helps to reduce computation requirements as well as eliminates need of accurate measurement of parameters.

Abstract

A class of nonlinear control system, in which the nonlinearity can not be expressed by any analytical expression, is difficult to analysis and design. Describing Function (DF) and Phase Plane Trajectory (PPT) are well established frequency and time domain methods for analysis of such systems. These methods are graphical methods and very time consuming methods. Novel GUI tool based on above two methods is presented. MATLAB based ’nonlintools’ is user friendly tool for analysis of nonlinear control systems. It is possible to find out existence, stability, frequency and amplitude of limit cycle very quickly. Functions and features are added such a way that it can be also used for design of nonlinear control systems to achieve desired performance. It is very simple to learn this tool. One can easily use it with preliminary knowledge of DF and PPT methods.

Abstract

This paper deals with the use of fractional order PID (FOPID) controller for controlling the output response of first order systems. In this paper, the PID controller and FOPID controller has been tuned using various optimization techniques: fminsearch, fmincon, genetic and fuzzy. The simulation result shows that the FOPID controller performs better than PID controller in most cases.

Abstract

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is widely used in industries. Here cascaded PI method is used for controlling VFD, in which inner loop is current feedback and outer loop is speed feedback. When multiple sensors(speed, current) are there for measuring conditions in controlled process, a cascaded control scheme is used, and cascaded system also gives faster compensation when disturbance occurs. PI tuning for the first order system is easy as it depends only on time constant of system, and for second order system PI tuning is difficult as it depends on peak time, rise time, peak overshoot, settling time parameters of the system. The estimated PI will not give proper output so for better dynamic performance PI need to be tuned based on the whole mechanical system.

Abstract

A Cryogenic temperature control system based on temperature monitor having multiple channels has been used for recording and monitoring the various temperature in Cryogenic Heat exchanger which is further used for liquid helium test facility. The effectiveness of heat exchanger can be maintain by the temperature that will be measured at inlet and outlet of the prototype heat exchanger. The temperature range of the tested heat exchanger is 77 k to 300 k. This paper tells the crucial role of temperature in cryogenic system and describes the process. Various sensors has been placed in the system and different temperature readings has been taken in LabVIEW where it can be monitor and log the varying temperature value of a cryogenic heat exchanger with the help of data acquisition system (DAQ). Siemens PLC (Programmable logic control) S7 300 has been introduced for controlling the cryogenic heat exchanger process.

Abstract

A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is an integrated circuit. It is known as System on programmable chip (SOPC) The FPGA configuration is generally specified using block diagramme representation and “VHDL”. Quartus-II can be interface with Nios-ii software tool. In that, “C-Programming” can be used for Modbus Communications, In Nios-II, with use of UART, CRC, function codes, timer and Frame receiving, timer application, data can be acquire from RS-232 Communications. Using “C-programming”, Data (i.e.-temperature, voltage, Current, Killowatt etc.) can be transferred to connected computer from modbus communication protocol. It suggests a potential solution for FPGA based Data Acquisition System. It proposes advanced method for data acquisition as part of good communication solution for different protocols.
